The UTB/TSC Scorpions extended their winning streak to four matches with
a 3-1 victory over New Mexico Highlands University at the four-team
Fairfield Inn/Staybridge
Suites Invitational at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena on the campus of
Angelo State University.
The victory was the second straight for the Scorpions over NCAA Division II opponents. On August 29, the Scorpions defeated Texas A&M University-Kingsville, 3-1.
Two more NCAA Division II opponents are on the radar Saturday, September 1. At 11 a.m., the Scorpions take on host Angelo State University (0-5) before meeting Midwestern State University (3-2) at 2 p.m.
UTB/TSC, now 4-2, won the opening match, 30-28, dropped the second 30-26, and came back strong to win the third and fourth games convincingly, 30-21, 30-24.
"We were a bigger team, and it was hard for them to match up," Scorpion head coach Marcus Young said. "They were a great serving team, but the match came down to who was stronger at the net, and our size is going to give a lot of teams trouble."
Talita Milasauskas collected 13 kills, four aces, five blocks and nine digs to lead the Scorpions. Claudia Alarcon added 11 kills and Katie Japp 10 with 12 digs. Setter Daianarah Bracero had 43 assists.
The Scorpions have a shot at winning the four-team tournament with two victories Saturday.
