Doane College, Morningside College Finish 4-0 at South Padre Island Volleyball Challenge

Great Plains Athletic Conference members Doane College and Morningside College won all four of their matches in the 2008 South Padre Island Volleyball Challenge Saturday, August 23, at Rivera High School.

The tournament was moved to Rivera High because the South Padre Island Convention Centre sustained damage from Hurricane Dolly July 23.

Host UTB/TSC, coming off a banner 36-9 season in 2007, lost all four of its matches in the tournament. The Scorpions dropped matches to 13th-ranked Morningside, 3-1, and then to 20th-ranked Dordt College, 3-0, on Saturday.

UTB/TSC was ranked #19 in the first NAIA preseason poll released Monday, but the Scorpions are sure to drop out of the next poll. UTB/TSC is without the services of returning All-American Talita Milasauskas, who is rehabilitating a sore shoulder after an automobile accident. She is expected to be out at least four weeks.

Oklahoma City University was the surprise team of the tournament. The unranked Stars handed two GPAC opponents their only losses of the tournament. The Stars upset Dordt, 3-2, and then blanked Briar Cliff University, 3-1. Each of those three teams finished 3-1 in the tournament.

Olivet Nazarene University, which advanced to the NAIA National Tournament with UTB/TSC in 2007, finished 1-3. Malone College and Our Lady of the Lake University were also 0-4 with the Scorpions.

UTB/TSC will seek its first victory of the season at the Texas A&M International University Tournament September 5-6.
