O'Leary, Ozuna Sign Letters of Intent to Join Scorpion Volleyball Team
Posted June 23, 2008
Jeanne O'Leary of McAllen and Amanda Ozuna of Los Fresnos signed Red River Athletic Conference Letters of Intent to play volleyball for the UTB/TSC Scorpions after participating in a tryout camp Saturday.

They are the first two signings for new Scorpion head volleyball coach John Barnes. A second tryout camp is scheduled at 9 a.m. Saturday July 12, at the Manuel Garza B. Gymnasium.

"I feel good about both of them on our team," Barnes said. "Jeanne will step in right away and be a big factor for us, while Amanda has good skills and will be a big part of our future."

O'Leary (5-8) graduated from Branson High School in Branson, Missouri in 2006, where she earned numerous honors and had offers to play collegiate volleyball in Missouri. She decided to attend Louisiana State University during the 2006-07 season, but did not participate in intercollegiate athletics. She has lived in McAllen since last year.

"I'm so excited, I've always wanted to do this," O'Leary said. "I've kept up with the team and hope we can make it back to nationals again."

O'Leary and her mother relocated from Metairie, Louisiana, to McAllen last year. She has been attending South Texas College, but will enter UTB/TSC as a freshman in eligibility.

Ozuna (5-7) started all four years at Los Fresnos High School, where she earned All-District, All-Metro, and received The Brownsville Herald All-Valley co-MVP honors.

"I had thought of going elsewhere to play like Corpus Christi or El Paso," Ozuna said. "I went to watch some games last year and thought how cool it would be to play here. Now I'll get a chance to play close to home."

Barnes said that he had invited six players who attended the first camp back to attend the second camp July 12. Students who are planning to attend UTB/TSC, or who have registered for classes in the fall, are encouraged to attend the camp.

For information about the tryouts, call Barnes at (956) 882-8912.

Note: O'Leary's first name is pronounced "Shawn or Sean."
