Posted September 20, 2008
Milica Mihajlovic's free kick glanced off
the fingertips of Christi Oswalt to end a dramatic 1-0 victory for the
UTB/TSC Scorpions over Our Lady of the Lake University Saturday,
September 20, at Morningside Park.
The game was scoreless after 90 minutes of regulation soccer. Overtime in the NAIA is "golden goal" whereby the first team that scores is the winner.
"We struggled a bit to score, but we found a way to win a a great free kick by Milica," Scorpion head soccer coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. "We were a bit lucky as well, considering that we had to play the second half and the overtime with only 10 players. We are finally finding a way to win, and we are positive the goals will come we just need to keep working hard as a team."
Mihajlovic, a freshman from Novi Sad, Serbia, had eight shot opportunities in the game. She also had three shots on goal, as did Linette Cuvillier.
Late in the first half, Scorpion midfielder Olyvia Gaytan received a red card, forcing the Scorpions to play with one less player the rest of the way.
"It was a tough, but deserved win over very organized and dangerous OLLU team," Barjaktarevic said. "Our defense executed well and kept our net safe neutralizing Amanda Bonds and their offense."
The Scorpions controlled the game everywhere but the scoreboard until the end. UTB/TSC had 22 shots compared to seven for OLLU. The Scorpions had 13 shots on goal compared to two for OLLU.
Scorpion goalkeeper played the entire 98 minutes, pitching her first shutout of the season.
The Scorpions, now 2-1-1 for the season, continue a stretch of four games within eight days when they visit Huston-Tillotson University in Austin Tuesday, September 23, in the Red River Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
