Posted June 4, 2008
Four new recruits
have signed Red River Athletic Conference Letters of Intent to join the 2008
UTB/TSC women’s soccer team.
The newest members of the Scorpion women’s soccer team include Elizabeth Drake of El Paso, Emily Husband from Huddersfield, England, Helen Wagstaff from Heckmondwike, England, and Verena Wonsikowski from Kleve, Germany.
“I expect the team to come together quick and it will be so much easier this year having a great group of returning players to build up on,” head women’s soccer coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. “The coaching staff worked very hard in putting this class together and we are very excited for the 2008 season.”
Drake, a goalkeeper, played four years at Coronado High School in El Paso, where she was team captain her senior year.
Husband, a strong defender, is a transfer from Huddersfield New College in England. She visited the campus during the spring semester.
Wagstaff, a midfielder, has a lot of experience with club and county teams in England. She is a graduate of Spin Valley High School in Heckmondwike, England.
Wonsikowski, a forward, is a graduate of Gymnasium Bocholt-Borken in Kleve. She is expected to be a major offensive threat for the Scorpions.
Barjaktarevic is expected to sign five more players to the team. All 14 new players are expected to make immediate impact on the team.
“After the successful start we had in the first season, our own expectations and those from the campus and community are forcing us to work harder on all levels especially recruiting,” Barjaktarevic said. “Our goal was to bring in an extraordinary group of student-athletes that will ensure the program’s continuous development.”
