Scorpions Drop 3-2 Decision to Houston St. Thomas

The UTB/TSC men's soccer team gave up three goals in 21 minutes in the first half and could not recover, dropping a 3-2 non-conference decision to St. Thomas University of Houston at Morningside Park Monday, October 15.

The Scorpions dropped to 9-4-1 overall against a St. Thomas team they had defeated 1-0 only eight days earlier. The Celts are members of the NAIA but not part of the Red River Athletic Conference.

Coach Dan Balaguero was very disappointed his team's performance, especially in the first half.

"The three goals we gifted St. Thomas were a pure joke ...  In my eight years of collegiate coaching that was the worst display I have ever seen from my team," Balaguero said. "As the head coach,  I will take my share of the responsibility and admit I got the line up wrong."

The Scorpions got started on the right foot, when Fernando Mendoza scored in the 10th minute. But the Celts battled back and scored in the 15th, 25th and 36th minute in the first half, one on a free kick that sailed over the head of goalkeeper Bojan Maric.

The score stood 3-1 at halftime. Mark McCormick, who Balaguero said "played magnificent, and battled all the way," scored on a free kick in the 83rd minute, but the Scorpions could not get the equalizer.

The Scorpions outshot St. Thomas, 15-9.

Despite the performance, the Scorpions are still in good position to win the Red River Athletic Conference crown at home Friday, when they host Texas College at 3 p.m. at Morningside Park.

UTB/TSC is 5-0 in Red River Athletic Conference play and leads second-place Texas Wesleyan University, which has a 4-1-1 record.
