HOUSTON --
William Carey University of Mississippi held off a comeback by the
UTB/TSC men's soccer team for a 2-1 victory Saturday, August 30, in the
first University of St. Thomas Soccer Classic.
The Scorpions (1-1) opened their season with a 3-0 victory over St.
Thomas on Friday. William Carey was playing its season opener.
"I'm disappointed because we dominated the game but we couldn't finish
it off," Scorpion head coach Dan Balaguero said. "We had our chances but
couldn't get the tying goal. It took us about 60 minutes before we
started playing our game."
After a scoreless first half, William Carey scored in the 48th minute on
a long-range shot and took a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute on a free kick.
The Scorpions cut the lead to 2-1 on a header by Juan Nava after a
corner kick by Brian Hardie in the 63rd minute.
UTB/TSC had two chances to tie it in the final moments. Juan Galvan had
a header opportunity go wide of the net and Darren O'Connor's shot
attempt hit the crossbar.
Goalkeeper Juan Gamboa had five saves for the Scorpions, who had 14
corner kicks. Nava and Fernando Mendoza took three shots each, while
Hardie and O'Connor had two each. The Crusaders had seven saves.
"It's not a bad way to start, going 1-1 on the road," Balaguero said.
"But I was hoping to go 2-0. We're hoping to get a good crowd when we
play at home next weekend."
The Scorpions begin their home season September 6-7 with a two-game
series against 'St. Thomas University and Oklahoma Baptist University at
Morningside Park.
