Scorpions Complete Successful First-Ever Spring with Focus on Strength, Conditioning
The UTB/TSC Scorpion men's soccer completed a very successful inaugural spring season, which was the first time many players had been involved in year-round training.

“The spring was very important for us; Andy (Ravanello) and I knew that players had to improve their general fitness levels” head coach Dan Balaguero said. “We want smart players who are going to give 110% day in day out.”

The players were put through various conditioning tests in late January and then performed the same tests again during the last week of classes. The strength and conditioning program was designed by assistant coach Andy Ravanello; players would work with the coaching staff three times a week. Ravanello was a powerful midfielder during his professional playing career and knows the importance of fitness.

“I was delighted with the progress the boys made over the semester.” Ravanello said. “Hopefully they will continue to progress over the summer. To be successful in modern day football you have to be a well-conditioned athlete.”

Combined with the gym work, the squad also trained twice a week at Scorpion Field.

“The spring is a time to try guys in different positions and to work on different tactics. I feel the biggest positive to come form the spring season was the fact that the team has bonded well, and everyone is excited for the fall season.” Said Balaguero.

The Scorpions concluded spring training with a 3-1 win at Texas A&M International University. Top scorer Fernando Ocete netted a double and freshman Ricki Rodriguez completed the scoring.  Keeper Juan Gamboa continued his excellent fall season, pulling off numerous spectacular saves.
