Our
UTB/TSC Scorpions Nickname Recognized by ESPN
Posted February 4, 2008
It's another historic moment -- UTB/TSC has made it to ESPN!
ESPN.com has confirmed what many of us already knew -- that our Scorpion nickname is the only one in the collegiate athletics in the U.S.
ESPN.com has listed its Travel Ten very best nicknames, and 15 other "Best of the Rest" category which the Scorpions made.
There is a New Mexico Scorpions minor league hockey team and Scottsdale Scorpions team in the Arizona Fall League, which is affiliated with Major League Baseball. There are several Scorpion mascots of high schools around the country.
UTB/TSC has used athletics since records have been kept of Texas Southmost College Scorpion athletics in 1929.
“Several years ago, we had a Scorpion mascot costume, but it was not exactly what we wanted,” UTB/TSC Vice President for Student Affairs said. “We are in the process of developing another mascot outfit, and we want to make sure it fits our image and will be entertaining as well.”
The top 10 collegiate athletic nicknames chosen were Banana Slugs, Cobbers, Geoducks, Ichabods, Keelhaulers, Ladies and Gents, Profs, Stormy Petrels, Student Princes, and Trolls.
Along with the Scorpions, the other collegiate athletic nicknames on the Honorable Mention list were Boll Weevils, Bridges, Cotton Blossoms, Gorillas, Gorlocks, Koalas, Lemmings, Lord Jeffs, Moundbuilders, Muleriders, Poets, Squirrels, Thundrebolts, and White Mules.
