could not hold its first-round
lead to Southwestern University
and finished in second place at
the
Trinity University Alamo City
Classic Golf Tournament at the
Rivers Crossing Golf Course
Tuesday, October 16.
After an opening-round score of 334, the Scorpions finished the second day with a 344, for a 678 total. Southwestern trailed the Scorpions by seven shots after one day at 341 but came back with a 332 total for a 673. The Scorpions were the only NAIA school competing against NCAA Division II and Division III teams.
Junior April Martinez shot a 79 after an opening-day 80 for a 159 total to finish second medalist to Marisa Mauldin of Southwestern, who had a 156.
"The greens killed us, it really cost us the tournament," Scorpion head coach Bob Lucio said. "Our putting was horrendous, the greens were deceiving and the whole field was having problems."
Other Scorpion scores were Ariana Gutierrez 81-86--167, RaeAnne Lerma 83-90--173, Amanda Anzaldua 90-89--179, and Andrea Cadriel 92-101--193.
The Scorpions got good scores from Tara Calderon and Allison Valle, who were playing as individuals. Calderon improved to an 84 after an opening-round 84 for a 177 total, and Valle had an 89 after a first-round 94 for a 183. Annette Valdez had a 97-100--197.
The tournament was the last competition for the Scorpions until February.
