TEMPLE
-- Scorpion golfer April Martinez
became the first medalist since
UTB/TSC joined the NAIA with a
36-hole total of 152 in the University of Mary
Hardin-Baylor Lady Crusader Fall Invitational
Tuesday, October 2 at the
Wildflower Country Club.
Martinez, who broke her own school record with a first-round 75 on Monday, fired a 77 Tuesday to win medalist honors by two strokes. It was the first time a Scorpion women's golfer won medalist honors since UTB/TSC joined the NAIA in 2006.
"April was just awesome, and this shows what she is capable of doing," Scorpion golf coach Robert Lucio said. "I'm pleased overall with the way the entire team played."
The Scorpions finished third in the 10-team field with a 331 Tuesday to go with their 338 Monday for a 669 total. Tyler Junior College won the tournament with a 650 total while Southwestern Community College was second with a 660.
Martinez, a junior from Edinburg Economedes High School, was not the only Scorpion with an impressive tournament. Freshman Rae-Anne Lerma shot a 78 Tuesday to go with her opening round 83 for a 161 total.
"This is what I expect from Rae-Anne," Lucio said. "It's not a surprise, but it's good to see. She can shoot rounds like this all the time."
Other scores for the Scorpion team were Ari Gutierrez with a 174 (87-87), Amanda Anzaldua 182 (89-93), and Andrea Cadriel 188 (91-97).
Competing as individual players Tara Calderon 178, Allison Valles 189, and Annette Valdez 198.
The next tournament for the Scorpions will be the Trinity University Tournament in San Antonio October 15-16.
