EDMOND, Okla. -–
April Martinez fired an
opening-round score of
82 and sits tied for
eighth place in the
individual medalist race
after the first day of
the NAIA Region VI
Tournament Monday, April
28, at the Rose
Creek Golf Club.
The 36-hole tournament finishes with the final 18 holes Tuesday, April 29.
Martinez trails Kelly Rainbolt of Lubbock Christian University, who shot a 76, by six shots. Three other golfers are tied for second with 77s, another is fifth with an 80, and two are tied for sixth with 81s.
The Scorpions sit in fifth place with a team score of 349 after the first day, trailing the nation's top-ranked golf team, Oklahoma City University, by 34 shots. OCU's first-round total of 315 leads LCU, ranked fifth in the nation, by 13 strokes.
Monday's first-round action started in 39-degree weather, with strong northerly winds. "Everyone did a great job of keeping it together early, and then holding on," Scorpion head golf coach Bob Lucio said. "This is a tough course for them to play, you need alot of course knowledge with tricky greens and it's very undiluted."
Southern Nazarene, the nation's 12th-ranked team, is in third with a 330 and Northwood, ranked No. 20, is in fourth with a 343.
Tara Calderon shot an 87 for the Scorpions, while teammates Allison Valles and Andres Cadriel each shot 90. Annette Valdez' 100 score did not count toward the team totals.
Although UTB/TSC is a member of the Red River Athletic Conference, there is no RRAC women’s golf tournament because not enough schools in the conference have women’s golf to qualify for conference affiliation.
