April Martinez, Tara Calderon, Allison Valles and Andrea Cadriel each defeated their Texas A&M International University opponents to lead the UTB/TSC women's golf team to a convincing 5-0 match play victory Wednesday, April 16, at Fort Brown Memorial Golf Course.
Although the Scorpions had only the four golfers, the Dust Devils sent five golfers to Brownsville. Cadriel, the Scorpions' #4 player, faced off against TAMIU's #4 Stacy Smith and #5 Karina Perez, and won over both, 9 and 8.
In match play, golfers try to defeat each other in a hole-by-hole format. Cadriel's victory was the most decisive, winning nine of the first 10 holes. The final eight holes were not played, because Cadriel could not be defeated by her rivals.

Martinez, the Scorpions' #1 golfer, won her match over TAMIU's Marisela Salinas, 7 and 6. She lost only one of the 12 holes played, and played one-over-par. Martinez had three birdies, five pars and four bogeys.
Calderon, the Scorpions #2 player, won her match over TAMIU's Bianca Vidaurri, 4 and 3. Valles, the Scorpions' #3 player, defeated TAMIU's Stacy Smith, 3 and 1, over 16 holes.
"We did really well today, despite the windy conditions," Scorpion head golf coach Bob Lucio said. "We hosted a good match and I hope to do this every year against TAMIU. This was good competition to prepare us for regionals."
Wednesday's match was the final tune-up for the Scorpions, who next compete in the NAIA Region VI Tournament April 28-29 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
