EDMOND, Okla. -– The UTB/TSC women's golf team finished in fifth place at the NAIA Region VI Tournament Tuesday, April 29, at the Rose Creek Golf Club.

After an opening-round score of 349 Monday, the Scorpions shot a 361 Tuesday to finish with a 710 score, 79 shots behind tournament champion and Oklahoma City University, the top-ranked women's golf team in the country.

Lubbock Christian shot a 658 for second place, and Southern Nazarene University had a 666 for third. Northwood University finished fourth with a 681 score.

After an opening-round score of 82, Scorpion junior golfer April Martinez shot an 87 Tuesday to finish with a 36-hole total of 169.

Other scores for the Scorpions were Tara Calderon 178, Allison Valles 181, Andrea Cadriel 182, and Annette Valdez 200. Valdez' score did not count toward the team totals.

After the first day of competition, Martinez was tied for eighth place but finished tied for 14th. OCU's Ashley Sholer won medalist honors with a 153 total.

Although UTB/TSC is a member of the Red River Athletic Conference, there is no RRAC women’s golf tournament because not enough schools in the conference have women’s golf to qualify for conference affiliation.

The Scorpions finish the season by competing in the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla. May 8-10.
