UTB/TSC will host the 10th Annual Sen. Eddie Lucio Invitational Golf Tournament Saturday and Sunday, February 16-17, at the Treasure Hills Country Club in Harlingen.

Saturday's action begins with progressive tee times at 12 noon. On Sunday, all teams tee off at 8 a.m. in a shotgun start.

The men's tournament will be a Ryder Cup-style matchup against Texas A&M International University. The first 18 holes on Saturday will be a two-man scramble and the final 18 holes Sunday will be match play. It's the first of four tournaments of the spring for the men's team.

"We do practice two-man scrambles sometimes," Scorpion men's and women's golf coach Robert Lucio said. "It helps, but everybody has to contribute. We see the strengths and weaknesses in each other this way."

April Martinez

On the women's side, the Scorpions will be among five teams that includes TAMIU, Huston-Tillotson University, McMurray University, and Texas Lutheran University. For the Scorpion women, it's the second of four spring tournaments.

Scorpion golfer April Martinez is expected to make a run at the medalist trophy after finishing second by one stroke at the Texas A&M International University Tournament February 4.

After an opening-round score of 80, Martinez came roaring back on the tournament's second day. Her round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 434-yard 17th hole.

"She's been in the top 10 all year," Lucio said. "She was exceptional in Laredo. She just overpowers the golf course and has really improved her short game."
