LAREDO -- Scorpion golfer April Martinez made a run at the medalist trophy at the Texas A&M University International-Jack Brown Memorial Golf Tournament Tuesday, February 4 at Laredo Country Club, but got little support from her teammates as UTB/TSC finished fourth.

After an opening-round score of 80, Martinez came roaring back Tuesday, getting the only eagle of the tournament on the par-5, 434-yard 17th hole. She finished the day with a two-over par 74 score and come within one stroke of Mariale Camey of UT-Pan American. Camey shot a 79 Tuesday after an opening-round 74 for a 153 total, edging Martinez by one shot.

UTB/TSC finished with a five-woman total of 700, trailing tournament medalist UT-Pan American, which shot a 627. St. Mary's University was second with a 354 and Dallas Baptist University third with a 693.

Other scores for the Scorpions were Tara Calderon at 184, Annette Valdez and Allison Valles at 186, and Andrea Cadriel at 188.

The tournament is one of four tournaments for the Scorpions this semester. The next tournament will be the 10th Annual Sen. Eddie Lucio Invitational to be held at the Treasure Hills Country Club in Harlingen Feb. 16-17.
