Milligan Ties School Record with 67; Scorpions Lead UMHB Fall Invitational
Posted October 1, 2007
SALADO -- Sophomore Chris Milligan tied a school record with a 67 and the UTB/TSC men's golf team has the first-round lead  of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Fall Invitational Monday, October 1, at the Mill Creek Golf Course.

Milligan, a sophomore from Harlingen High, tied the school record set by Joey Zayas in a 2002 junior college golf tournament in Paris, Texas. UTB/TSC started its golf program in 1998 and began competing in the NAIA in 2006. The Scorpions competed in the NJCAA from 1998-2006.

"That's a great golf round that Chris had today," Scorpion head golf coach Bob Lucio said. "Any of our guys is capable of having a day like Chris had. I was pleased with Chris and everyone,  but we can do better."

Milligan's score, which was four-under-par, wasn't the only eye-opener. Freshman O.J. Moreno from Donna is in second place with a two-under-par 70, shooting 36 on the front nine and 34 on the back nine. Moreno's score does not count toward the team totals because he is playing as an individual.

"O.J. didn't qualify, so that shows how strong our team is," Lucio said. "We're getting close to being as strong as we need to be, but we're not consistent enough. All of the great golf today won't mean anything if we don't have great rounds again tomorrow (Tuesday.)"

Senior Anthony Lopez is tied for fourth place with a 73.

The Scorpions hold a five-shot lead in the tournament with a 295, five shots ahead of the University of Texas at Dallas.

Jones Mitchell and Victor Calzada also had good rounds with 77 and 78, respectively, on the Scorpion team scores. Jerry Borgogni shot an 87.

Sophomore Brock Crosson shot an 82 and freshman Nate Atkins shot an 86.

The final 18 holes of the tournament are scheduled Tuesday, October 2.
