Men, Women Golfers Finish Strong
at
PGA Minority Collegiate Golf

and women’s golf
teams closed out their 2007-08
seasons with solid rounds at the the 22nd
Annual PGA Minority Collegiate
Golf Championship at the PGA
Golf Club Sunday, May 11.
Sparked by Anthony Lopez' round of 74 and Chris Milligan's 75, the Scorpion men shot a 308 to finish in second place in the NAIA division behind Johnson & Wales University, which had an 857.
Lopez finished with a 54-hole total of 224 and Milligan 231. Other Scorpion scores were Brock Crosson 235 (78-75-82), Jones Mitchell 244 (86-81-77), and Nate Atkins 254 (86-82-86).
Playing as individuals, O.J. Moreno had 243 (82-81-80), and Victor Calzada 253 (85-85-83).
For seniors Lopez and Mitchell, it was their last tournament action of their careers. On the women's side, seniors Tara Calderon and Annette Valdez wrapped up their collegiate careers as well. Calderon had the best round of her collegiate career Saturday, shooting a 78.
April Martinez shot a 76 to led UTB/TSC to a strong finish for a third-place tie at 1023 with South Carolina State University. Bethune-Cookman University won the women's division with a 918 and UT-Pan American finished second at 934.
Martinez finished with a 249 (84-89-76), followed by teammates Calderon 251 (84-78-89), Allison Valles 255 (85-88-82), Andrea Cadriel 268 (94-86-88) and Valdez 292 (95-100-97).
"We were playing at a PGA golf course, it's an outstanding facility. We shot better each day, and I was very proud of that.
Lucio felt that the strong finish and returning golfers are positives for next year.
"It gives us momentum going into next year," Lucio said. "We know what we need to do next year. We have a lot of bright golfers coming back, and we're going to have a great recruiting class. Things are getting better, I know they are."
