Scorpion Golfers Finish in 10th Place at NAIA Region VI Tournament

LUBBOCK -- The UTB/TSC men’s golf team finished in 10th place at the NAIA Region VI Championship Tournament Tuesday, April 22, at Hillcrest Country Club.

The Scorpions shot a four-man total of 314 in Tuesday's single round. The Scorpions shot rounds of 316 and 315 in the first two rounds of play Monday, for a 54-hole total of 945.

Oklahoma City University, the third-ranked team in the country, won the tournament with a total of 856, and its team will qualify for the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship at Indiana National Golf Club in Plymouth, Ind. May 13-16.

Michael Loppnow of Wayland Baptist University won medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 208, and will also qualify for nationals.

Wayland Baptist University, ranked #9, finished in second at 862 and Oklahoma Christian, the top-ranked team in the country, was third at 868.

The Red River Athletic Conference Tournament was held concurrently, and the Scorpions finished in fourth place, 58 strokes behind RRAC champion Texas Wesleyan University, which had an 887. TWU finished fourth overall in the regional.

Other RRAC scores were Northwood University at 890 and College of the Southwest at 913.

Jones Mitchell led the Scorpions with a morning round of 77 Tuesday for a 54-hole total of 232. Anthony Lopez shot a 76 Tuesday for a 234 total. Other scores for the Scorpions were Chris Milligan with an 80 Tuesday for a 237, and Victor Calzada with an 81 Tuesday for a 242.  O.J. Moreno's scores of 83-83-82 for a 248 were not counted toward the team total.

The Scorpions will finish their season by competing in the 22nd Annual PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla. May 8-10.
