Scorpion Golfers in 10th Place
after First Day of NAIA Region

LUBBOCK -- The UTB/TSC men’s
golf team is in 10th place after
the first day's 36 holes at the NAIA Region VI Championship
Tournament held concurrently Monday,
April 21, at Hillcrest Country
Club.
The Scorpions shot a four-man total of 316 in the morning round and 315 in the afternoon round for a 631 total. The final 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament will be held with progressive tee times Tuesday morning.
Oklahoma City University, the third-ranked team in the country, and Wayland Baptist University, ranked #9, are tied for first place with 574 scores. Oklahoma Baptist University, the #1-ranked team, is six strokes behind with a 580.
The Red River Athletic Conference Tournament is being held concurrently, and the Scorpions are in fourth place, 34 strokes behind RRAC leader Northwood University, which had a 597.
"We hit it very well today, but the competition is real tough here with some of the best teams in the country," Scorpion head coach Bob Lucio said. "We don't have the local knowledge of the courses here. It's a different environment here."
Jones Mitchell led the Scorpions with a morning round of 75 and afternoon round of 80 for a 155 total. Chris Milligan had scores of 77 and 80 for a 157, Anthony Lopez 81 and 77 for a 158, and Victor Calzada 83 and 78 for a 161. O.J. Moreno's scores of 83-83 for a 166 were not counted toward the team total.
Thirteen teams in the region are competing –- four from the Red River Athletic Conference and eight from the Sooner Athletic Conference. Six of the teams are nationally ranked.
The tournament winner qualifies for the National Tournament held on May 13-16 in Plymouth, Ind.
Besides the three Top 10-ranked teams from the Sooner Athletic Conference, other ranked teams are Southern Nazarene University (#10), Texas Wesleyan University (#12) and Northwood (#19).
