FORT WORTH –- The Scorpion men's golf team sits in ninth place after the first day of the UST Texas Intercollegiate Golf Tournament holes at the Hawks Creek Golf Club here Sunday, March 16.

UTB/TSC shot a round of 308, 18 strokes behind tournament leader Oklahoma City University, the third-ranked team in the NAIA 290. Oklahoma Christian University, the NAIA's top-ranked team, sits in third place. The Scorpions are within 10 shots of fourth place.

Sophomores Victor Calzada and Chris Milligan both shot 75 to lead the Scorpions in the first round. Senior Jones Mitchell shot a 77, senior Anthony Lopez an 81, and freshman O.J. Moreno had an 86. For Calzada, the round of 75 was his career best as a Scorpion.

"Victor was the highlight of the day," Scorpion head coach Bob Lucio said. "He was one-under par in the front nine and shot a 40 on the back nine, and that's the best round he's had. He works really hard and I was glad to see him play well."

The 36-hole tournament concludes with progressive tee times at 8:30 a.m. Monday, March 17. Weather conditions are threatening Monday's competition.

After the weekend tournament, the Scorpions will compete in the Oklahoma Baptist University Bison Classic April 7-8 in Oklahoma City and follow that with a trip to the Red River Athletic Conference and NAIA Region VI Championship April 21-22 in Lubbock.
