SHAWNEE, Okla. -- Anthony Lopez and Agapito Ortega
shot rounds of 77 and 78, respectively, to lead the UTB/TSC men's golf team
efforts after the first round of the Oklahoma Baptist University Bison
Classic Monday, April 9, at the Shawnee Country Club.
The second and final round begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 10.
The Scorpions are in sixth place in the 12-team field after the first day with a 321 score. Oklahoma Baptist University leads the field with a 306 with Northwood University second at 307.
Lopez is tied for 11th place in the individual medalist honors with his 35-42=77 score. Ortega shot a 37-41=78 to rank 15th.
Other scores were Jones Mitchell 40-43=83, "Chris Milligan 40-43=83, and Jerry Borgogni 47-43=90. Victor Calzada had a 52-43=95, but his score did not count toward the team total.
"We played pretty decently considering the conditions," Scorpion head golf coach Bob Lucio said. The Scorpions were expected to arrive Saturday in Oklahoma City in time for a practice round Sunday, but wintry weather conditions prevented their arrival until Sunday, thereby eliminating the practice round.
"We were playing the 150-yard spot most of the time, because we didn't know the course. It was pretty cold out there with temperatures in the 40s, but everybody was playing in the same weather. Hopefully we can drop our scores tomorrow now that we know the course a little better."
The tournament is the final tuneup before the Red River Athletic Conference and Region VI Championship Tournament April 23-24 in Edmond, Okla.
