In a home game on March 12 against PQC, two Tiger pitchers hit 10 Scorpion batsmen, breaking the previous record of eight held by three schools -- William Woods University (Mo.) in 2004, Pacific Lutheran University (Wash.) in 1994 and Central Washington University in 1995.
This is the first national record for UTB/TSC, as well as for Paul Quinn College. The Scorpions won the game, 16-2.
The record was recently verified by the NAIA.
"It's not important to me if it's a record, if someone's going to give 10 free baserunners in a game, I'll take that," Scorpion coach Joel Barta said. "The humor in is that anyone who has ever played for me would take pride of that record."
Another funny statistic from the game -- the Scorpions scored 16 runs with nine hits. They had more batters hit by pitches than they had base hits.
PQC pitcher Culbert Evans and Jorge Rivera administered the 10 plunkings. Evans hit six Scorpions with pitches and Rivera four.
Evans beaned five consecutive Scorpions in the first inning –- Brian Dombeck, Robby Mang, Ignacio Celedon, Gilbert Puente and Scott Price. Evans also plunked Dombeck in the second inning.
Rivera pitched the third, fourth and fifth innings. He hit Dombeck in the third inning, Price and Jacob Yousif in the fourth inning, and Celedon in the fifth.
Dombeck was hit by pitch three times, but that was not even the high for a Scorpion batter that week. Celedon was hit by a pitched ball four times in a March 16 home game against William Woods University. WWU, which beat the Scorpions 14-6 that night, hit seven Scorpion batters.
