The 2007 edition of the UTB/TSC
Scorpions defeated a team composed
of Alumni and other Scorpions, 16-5,
at Scorpion Field Saturday, January
20.
Four alumni participated, including 64-year-old Pete Avila, a grandfather of 14 who played for the first Scorpion baseball team in 1974-75.
Avila played catcher for the first two batters in the first inning. Another member of the first Scorpion team, Gilbert Castillo, played several innings at second base.
Rocky Winter, who played for the Scorpions in 1978-79, played much of the seven-inning game at third base and made defensive stops.
Hector Garanzuay, a member of the Scorpions in 1999 and 2000, also participated and drove in the game's first run with a double in the first inning. Garanzuay has played professionally in Texas and Mexico.
The UTB/TSC Alumni Association donated hot dogs, which were given away to the 100 or so fans who braved the cool evening.
The Scorpions open the season at home at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 1, against Instituto Tec Superior de Poza Rica, Mexico.
