Posted January 19, 2008
Wayland Baptist University collected only eight hits in two games, but they were enough for 3-0 and 3-2 victories over the UTB/TSC Scorpions in the season openers for both teams at Scorpion Field Saturday, January 19.

The Scorpions (0-2) and Pioneers (2-0) meet again for another doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday, January 20, at Scorpion Field. Both games will be seven innings in length.

The games were the first collegiate baseball games in Texas in 2008, and only the second series in the country thus far. The starting date of January 19 is believed to be the earliest starting date in Scorpion baseball history.

NCAA teams cannot begin play until February 23.

Wayland Baptist 3, UTB/TSC 0 (first game)

The Pioneers had only five hits, but it was enough for a 3-0 victory over the Scorpions in the first game of the doubleheader.

Sophomore Julian Moya went six innings for the Scorpions, striking out six, walking three, and allowing two earned runs. Jesse Galvan pitched the final seventh inning, allowing one hit and one earned run.

Walter Blume had two of the Scorpions' four hits.

UTB/TSC's best rally came in the fourth inning when Ryan MacDonald walked and Schaune Collins singled with one out, but both runners were stranded. Ignacio Celedon had the other Scorpion hit.

Todd Jeffress, Shea Clark and Mario Canales combined for the four-hit shutout for WBU. Brett Sheppard had two hits for the Pioneers.

Wayland Baptist 3, UTB/TSC 2 (second game)

Four Scorpion errors played a big part in the one-run loss in the second game. Four Scorpion pitchers combined to allow WBU only three hits, but the Scorpions had only three hits themselves.

WBU scored its first run without a hit in the second inning on a walk, error and wild pitch. The Pioneers added two more in the third on only one hit and two Scorpion errors.

Trailing 3-0 going into the bottom the sixth, the Scorpions scored their first runs of the season.

Jacob Yousif singled and Blume doubled to start the rally, and MacDonald scored Yousif on a sacrifice fly, with Blume moving to third on the throw to home. Blume then scored on a wil pitch.

Designated hitter Tyler O'Neal had the other Scorpion hit in the second game.
