The Scorpions, who swept a doubleheader from Wiley Saturday, 6-4 and 10-8, finished the RRAC South Zone play with a 7-5 record. UTB/TSC, now 20-28 overall, clinched a spot in the RRAC Tournament on Saturday.
Wiley is now 5-4 in RRAC South Zone play but has not clinched a playoff spot.
The Scorpions were hoping to complete the series sweep Sunday and clinch the No. 2 position in the South Zone for the postseason tournament, but now must wait until the outcome of the series between conference leader Huston-Tillotson University (9-0) and Wiley in Austin April 18-19. Unless Wiley sweeps HTU, the Scorpions would still finish in second place. If Wiley swept HTU, the Scorpions would finish in third place.
The postseason berth is the first for the Scorpion baseball team as a member of the NAIA, which UTB/TSC joined in the 2006-07 season. It is also the first postseason berth for the Scorpions since the 2000 season as members of the NJCAA.
UTB/TSC will host the six-team RRAC Tournament April 28-May 2. The top three finishers from the RRAC North Zone and South Zone will meet in the double-elimination tournament.
In Sunday's three-hour, 30-minute marathon, the Scorpions led after two innings, 8-3, before Wiley tied the game with five runs in the fourth to make it 8-8. The score was tied 9-9 after six innings, 10-10 after seven, and 11-11 after eight. The Wildcats scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a bases-loaded single.
UTB/TSC had 18 hits, with Ryan MacDonald collecting four hits, and Andres Monterrubio and Gilbert Puente three each. Jorge Camorlinga, Tyler O'Neal and Jacob Yousif added two hits each.
The Scorpions have only four non-conference games remaining in the regular season. UTB/TSC hosts its last regular-season game at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, against Texas A&M International University. The Scorpions end the regular season on the road against Houston Baptist University April 19-20.
